I used to be the person who avoided the room too.
I put off taking a required speech class for four years in undergrad. I was so nervous getting my way through presentations in grad school because writing was easier than talking. After graduating, the first time I had to testify in court for a client, my knees were actually shaking. I did a terrible job. But I kept showing up, kept doing the self-talk, kept getting a little more solid every time — until I realized the fear had always been bigger than the thing I was afraid of.
That's the whole premise of my work now.
I'm Dr. Tena Burnett — PhD, LPC, EMDR certified, 22 years in this field. I've worked as a family counselor, a school counselor, a clinical supervisor, a crisis responder, and now I run The Burnett Advantage, where I help people get over their fear of visibility.
Not fear in general. This one, specifically: the freeze before the pitch, the eleven takes before you post the reel, the good idea you sit on because someone might think it's dumb. It has a name that I just call "Fear of Visibility" and it's solvable — most people just don't know that yet.
What I actually do:
I offer a One Day Get Over Visibility Intensive. One day, six hours of EMDR, a follow-up session, and the tools to use after you leave.
This isn't about miraculously never feeling nervous again. We work together so fear no longer running your life and your choices. Clients walk out able to do the thing they've been avoiding. They raise their rate and send the email instead of sitting on it for three weeks. They post the reel instead of filming it eleven times and deleting it. They walk into the room and pitch instead of letting someone else talk over them. They take the interview, the stage, and the deal, instead of finding a reason to opt out.
We work to help get you there in a day. I'm not going to tell you it's magic, but I've watched EMDR and how it works for my clients. I'm confident in what happens when someone shows up ready to do the work.
How I work
I'm not here to hand you a script or tell you who to be. This is your process — I'm the facilitator. Most of my clients already know the answer underneath their own fear. I just ask the questions that help them see it. I've had people tell me I'm easy to talk to, chill, not what they expected from a therapist. Good. That's on purpose and just me being me.
I believe you shouldn't have to EARN the right to be seen, to be imperfect, to show your work before it's polished. It's okay to have goals. It's okay to be wrong sometimes. Nothing bad happens if you mess up in front of people — I promise you that part but you won't know if you don't try.
Who this is for
You know you've been holding yourself back, and you're tired of it. You are tired of underperforming. And tired of being scared of something that, when you say it out loud, really isn't that big. You are tired of second-guessing yourself out of opportunities you actually want. You've got the ambition — the fear has just been feeling way bigger and making you think it's more important and always right.
If that's you, and you're ready to do the work, let's talk.
